Welcome to Oak Tutoring – Support That Grows with Your Child

Introduction

Welcome — we’re so glad you’re here. Whether your child is preparing for the KS2 SATs, the 11+, or just needs a little boost in confidence with English or Maths, Oak Tutoring is here to help.

We offer small-group, online lessons for Years 4–6 that are structured, calm and child-friendly — all designed to support learning and wellbeing hand in hand.

Why “Oak” Tutoring?

The oak tree symbolises strength, growth and steady progress — exactly what we aim to nurture in every learner. Just like an oak tree takes time to grow strong roots, we believe in consistent, encouraging support that builds real confidence over time.

What Makes Us Different

We don’t just teach to the test. We focus on helping children understand what they’re learning — and why it matters. Our tutors are high-achieving grammar school students who remember what it’s like to be in Year 4, 5 or 6. They explain concepts clearly and they genuinely care.

Who Our Lessons Are For

  • Children in Years 4–6
  • Families preparing for KS2 SATs or the 11+ FSCE **
  • Anyone looking for structured weekly support in English and Maths

We offer a monthly subscription or flexible Pay-As-You-Go booking — no pressure, just progress.

📍 A Note on 11+ in Devon

In Devon, the 11+ exam your child sits depends on the school they apply to.

  • Torbay Grammar Schools (e.g. Torquay Boys’, Girls’ and Churston) use GL Assessment
  • Colyton Grammar School uses FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise)
  • Plymouth Girls’ Grammar Schools share a common GL test

At Oak Tutoring, our weekly lessons are aligned with FSCE, which focuses on English, Maths and Creative Writing — but we may offer GL-style booster sessions (including Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning) if there’s demand.

** What Is FSCE?

FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) provides the entrance tests used by Colyton Grammar School. The exam is designed to reflect classroom-style learning and tests core academic skills, rather than coaching-based logic puzzles.

It includes:

  • 📖 English – comprehension, spelling, grammar and vocabulary
  • Maths – up to the end of Year 5 curriculum
  • ✍️ Creative Writing – short written tasks or story openers

FSCE tests are often seen as more curriculum-aligned and writing-based.

What Is GL Assessment?

GL Assessment exams are used by other grammar schools, including Torquay Boys’ and Girls’ Grammar Schools. The format is broader and includes:

  • 📘 English
  • 📐 Maths
  • 🧠 Verbal Reasoning (VR)
  • 🔲 Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR)

🔵 Non-Verbal Reasoning includes shape puzzles, codes and pattern spotting — which are not part of the UK National Curriculum and are not included in our weekly sessions at Oak Tutoring. 🧠 Our tutors have excelled in Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning themselves, and we’re aware that many families are seeking support in this area. If there’s enough interest, we’re happy to offer additional GL-style booster sessions covering Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning later in the year.
